Trivalent inactivated poliovirus vaccine (t-IPV) is a sterile suspension of three types of poliovirus (Type 1 Mahoney, Type 2 MEF-1, and Type 3 Saukett) that have been inactivated with formaldehyde. It is used to provide active immunization against poliomyelitis by inducing the production of serum neutralizing antibodies against all three poliovirus serotypes. In the clinical trial context provided, t-IPV was utilized as the standard-of-care control arm in a Phase II study conducted by VaxTrials S.A. to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of a novel high-dose monovalent type 2 vaccine (m-IPV2 HD) in infants. Unlike oral polio vaccines (OPV), t-IPV is administered via injection and does not carry the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP).
