Overview

The trivalent inactivated seasonal influenza vaccine (TIV) is a biologic vaccine used for the active immunization against seasonal influenza. It contains inactivated (killed) virus particles or purified surface glycoproteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from three distinct influenza strains: typically two influenza A subtypes (A/H1N1 and A/H3N2) and one influenza B lineage. The specific strains included in the vaccine are updated annually based on World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations to match the predicted circulating viruses for the upcoming season. TIV works by stimulating the immune system to produce hemagglutinin-inhibiting antibodies and memory B-cell responses, which neutralize the virus and prevent it from infecting host cells. While quadrivalent vaccines (QIV) have become more common in many markets, TIV remains a foundational tool in global influenza prevention strategies.
