Overview

A non-adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) is an inactivated vaccine designed to provide active immunity against three different strains of the influenza virus: typically two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage. Historically developed and marketed by Novartis Vaccines (whose influenza portfolio was subsequently acquired by CSL/Seqirus), these vaccines include products such as Agrippal (a surface antigen vaccine) and Fluvirin (a split-virion vaccine). The vaccine contains purified viral hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) antigens, which stimulate the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry into host cells. In clinical development programs, Novartis frequently utilized these non-adjuvanted TIV formulations as active comparators to evaluate the enhanced immunogenicity and safety of their MF59-adjuvanted vaccine, Fluad, particularly in pediatric and elderly populations.
