Overview

This is an investigational trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) developed by Seqirus (formerly Novartis Vaccines), featuring an enhanced dose of the influenza A (specifically H3N2) hemagglutinin antigen and the MF59 adjuvant. MF59 is an oil-in-water emulsion containing squalene designed to boost the immune response, which is particularly beneficial for the elderly population (65 years and older) who often exhibit reduced immune responses to standard vaccination. The vaccine targets two influenza A subtypes and one influenza B strain. It was evaluated in a Phase 1b dose-finding study (NCT01317030) to determine the optimal balance of antigen dose and adjuvant concentration to improve protection against seasonal influenza, particularly the H3N2 subtype which often causes more severe disease in older adults.
