Overview

Trivalent killed influenza vaccine is an inactivated (killed) viral vaccine designed to protect against three strains of seasonal influenza viruses. Each annual formulation contains antigens from two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage virus (currently B/Victoria). The viruses are grown in embryonated chicken eggs or cell culture, harvested, chemically inactivated (commonly with formaldehyde or β-propiolactone), and then purified. The immune response is primarily directed against the hemagglutinin protein of each included strain. Trivalent vaccines may be formulated as whole-virus inactivated vaccines, split-virus vaccines (treated with detergent to disrupt the viral envelope), or subunit vaccines containing further purified hemagglutinin proteins. Some formulations include adjuvants such as MF59 to enhance immunogenicity. The primary indication is prevention of seasonal influenza infection for individuals aged 6 months and older[1][3][4][5][8].
