Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Trivalent live attenuated seasonal influenza vaccine (LAIV3) is a type of influenza vaccine formulated to protect against three strains of the influenza virus—two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage (B/Victoria). The "live attenuated" designation means the viruses in the vaccine are alive but weakened so they do not cause illness in healthy individuals. This formulation is typically administered as a nasal spray rather than an injection. The mechanism of action involves stimulating an immune response by mimicking natural infection in the upper respiratory tract, leading to immunity against circulating strains included in the vaccine. Live attenuated vaccines are generally recommended for healthy individuals aged 2–49 years without chronic medical conditions[6][7]. For the 2024–2025 U.S. season, all flu vaccines will be trivalent due to removal of B/Yamagata lineage from formulations[1][2][4].
