A trivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) that was the focus of a major clinical study by the University of Hong Kong (NCT01196026) to evaluate the indirect protection (herd immunity) provided to household members and classmates of vaccinated children. The vaccine is composed of three live, weakened influenza virus strains—typically two Influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one Influenza B lineage—that are cold-adapted to replicate only in the nasopharynx. Administered as an intranasal spray, it induces a comprehensive immune response, including mucosal IgA and systemic T-cell activity, mimicking a natural infection without causing the disease. The HKU study demonstrated that vaccinating children aged 7-11 years significantly reduced the incidence of influenza in their unvaccinated contacts.
