trivalent oral polio vaccine

The trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) is a live attenuated biologic designed to provide immunity against all three serotypes of poliovirus (types 1, 2, and 3). It contains live attenuated strains of the virus, specifically the Sabin strains: LS c2ab for type 1, P712 Ch 2ab for type 2, and Leon I2aIb for type 3. Administered orally, tOPV stimulates the production of protective neutralizing antibodies and induces mucosal immunity in the intestine, which is critical for interrupting person-to-person transmission. While it was the primary tool for global polio eradication for decades, it was phased out of routine immunization programs globally in April 2016 in favor of bivalent OPV (bOPV) to mitigate the risk of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2).
