Overview
Trivalent OPV Birmex is a live attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) developed by Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México (Birmex). It contains attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, produced using Vero cell culture technology. The vaccine is designed to prevent poliomyelitis by inducing both systemic IgG antibodies and local intestinal mucosal IgA immunity, which prevents the virus from replicating in the gut and spreading to the nervous system. It has been evaluated in Phase III clinical trials (e.g., NCT01870206) to demonstrate immunogenicity and safety comparable to other WHO-prequalified Vero cell-derived OPVs.
