Overview

The trivalent sub-unit influenza vaccine (University of Witwatersrand) is an inactivated influenza vaccine formulation specifically evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial in South Africa. It contains purified surface antigens (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from three influenza virus strains, typically following the Southern Hemisphere seasonal recommendations. In the context of the University of Witwatersrand study led by Dr. Shabir Madhi, the vaccine was used to assess immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy in HIV-infected children aged 6 months to 5 years. The vaccine aims to prevent influenza-associated morbidity and pneumonia by inducing protective antibody responses against circulating seasonal strains.
