Overview

**Trivalent subunit inactivated influenza vaccine** (TIV) is a purified, inactivated influenza vaccine containing viral hemagglutinin (HA) subunits from three different influenza viruses: two influenza A virus subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage virus (currently B/Victoria). TIV does not contain live virus and is incapable of causing influenza. The subunit formulation is further purified, primarily containing HA and some neuraminidase (NA), designed to stimulate the immune system to develop antibodies against the included strains. The vaccine is indicated for the prevention of influenza and is especially recommended for populations at increased risk of severe influenza, such as young children, the elderly, and people with certain health conditions. The mechanism of action is induction of strain-specific neutralizing antibodies, predominantly against the HA protein, although some induction of T cell immunity against internal viral proteins has also been observed. Most trivalent subunit inactivated vaccines are produced in embryonated chicken eggs, though some (e.g., Flucelvax) are produced in cell culture[1][3][4].
