Trivalent subunit influenza vaccines are a type of inactivated influenza vaccine that contains purified hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) antigenic proteins from three influenza virus strains: one influenza A(H1N1) virus, one influenza A(H3N2) virus, and one influenza B virus (typically from the Victoria lineage). These vaccines are prepared by further extracting, purifying, and concentrating the HA and NA proteins from split-virion vaccines. The subunit formulation reduces reactogenicity compared to whole-virus vaccines while maintaining immunogenicity in primed populations. Starting with the 2024-2025 flu season, all influenza vaccines in the United States have transitioned from quadrivalent to trivalent formulations due to the apparent disappearance of the B/Yamagata lineage viruses since March 2020.
