Overview

A trivalent virosomal influenza vaccine is a type of inactivated influenza vaccine that utilizes virosomes—reconstituted viral envelopes—as a delivery system for viral surface antigens (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase). The virosomes are composed of a phospholipid bilayer that incorporates these antigens, mimicking the structure of the native virus but lacking the internal genetic material, which prevents viral replication. This technology serves a dual purpose: the virosomes act as a biomimetic carrier that protects the antigens and as a physical adjuvant that enhances the immune response by facilitating fusion with endosomal membranes of antigen-presenting cells, thereby promoting both humoral and cellular immunity. Trivalent formulations typically include antigens from two Influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one Influenza B lineage. Notable examples include Invivac (developed by Solvay) and Inflexal V (developed by Crucell).
