Overview

Tromantadine is an antiviral small molecule of the adamantane derivative class used primarily as a topical gel for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections and herpes zoster (shingles)[1][2][3][4]. It is marketed under brand names such as Viru-Merz and Viru-Merz Serol[4]. Tromantadine acts by inhibiting both early and late stages of viral replication. Its mechanism involves altering host cell glycoproteins to impede viral absorption, inhibiting penetration of the virus into cells, and preventing uncoating of virions[1][2][4][5]. The drug’s performance in clinical use is similar to aciclovir[4].
