tropicamide

Tropicamide is a synthetic anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent primarily used in ophthalmology. It acts as a competitive antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the eye, leading to relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the iris and ciliary muscle. This results in mydriasis (pupil dilation) and cycloplegia (paralysis of accommodation). Tropicamide is commonly used for diagnostic procedures such as fundus examination and refraction testing, as well as for preoperative and therapeutic purposes where pupil dilation or cycloplegia is required. Its onset is rapid and duration short compared to atropine.
