Tropoelastin is the soluble, monomeric precursor of elastin, a critical structural protein that imparts elasticity and resilience to tissues such as the skin, lungs, and vasculature. In the extracellular space, tropoelastin molecules are cross-linked by lysyl oxidase to form insoluble elastin fibers. As a therapeutic agent, recombinant tropoelastin is used in regenerative medicine and dermatology to promote wound healing, reduce scarring, and restore tissue elasticity. PancreaCell (a Leonhardt Ventures company) incorporates the stimulation of endogenous tropoelastin release into its bioelectric regenerative platform to facilitate tissue repair and extracellular matrix formation. Other developers have explored recombinant tropoelastin as an injectable or topical agent for aesthetic and surgical applications.
