Overview
Truvada with Proteus Sensor System is an integrated digital medicine product consisting of the fixed-dose combination antiretroviral Truvada (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine) overencapsulated with an ingestible sensor. Developed in collaboration with the University of Colorado, Denver, and utilizing technology from Proteus Digital Health, this system is designed to monitor medication adherence in real-time, which is critical for the efficacy of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The sensor, once ingested, is activated by stomach acid and transmits a signal to a wearable patch, which then communicates with a mobile application. Truvada itself acts by inhibiting HIV reverse transcriptase, thereby preventing viral replication.
