Overview

Trypsin is a serine protease enzyme, traditionally harvested from the pancreas of bovine or porcine sources, that catalyzes the hydrolysis of peptide bonds specifically at the carboxyl side of the basic amino acids lysine and arginine. Therapeutically, trypsin is most commonly employed as a topical debriding agent to treat decubitus ulcers, pressure sores, and other necrotic wounds; it facilitates the removal of devitalized tissue and purulent exudate by liquefying proteinaceous debris. In the context of pancreatic disorders, trypsin is a critical component of pancrelipase (pancreatin) used for enzyme replacement therapy in patients with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency resulting from chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis. Additionally, oral formulations of trypsin, often in combination with chymotrypsin, are used in certain jurisdictions to manage inflammation and edema following trauma or surgical procedures.
