Tryptophan-tyrosine (Trp-Tyr) is a bioactive dipeptide, typically derived from whey protein, that has demonstrated neuroprotective properties in models of neurodegenerative disease. It is the primary active component in **β-lactolin**, a functional food ingredient developed by **Kirin Holdings**. Research indicates that Trp-Tyr dipeptide intake can attenuate cognitive decline and prevent amyloid and tau-related pathologies. Specifically, it has been shown to prevent tau phosphorylation, increase synaptophysin expression, and enhance dopamine turnover in the frontal cortex. Additionally, it modulates the gut-brain axis by increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids in the cecum. While currently marketed as a nutraceutical for cognitive support in the elderly, it is being investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies.
