Overview

Tuaminoheptane is a sympathomimetic agent and vasoconstrictor primarily used as a nasal decongestant for the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion, sinusitis, and rhinitis. It acts as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and releasing agent, increasing norepinephrine levels in the synaptic cleft, which leads to vasoconstriction in the nasal passages and subsequent decongestion. Its stimulant effects are also attributed to this mechanism. Tuaminoheptane has been used both alone and in combination with other agents such as acetylcysteine. While it was formerly more widely available (including oral preparations), its use is now limited due to concerns about efficacy and side effects such as skin irritation, tachycardia, hypertension, and potential for abuse. It remains on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances due to its stimulant properties[1][4][5][6][7].
