Overview

Tubeimoside I (TBMS1) is a triterpenoid saponin isolated from the tubers of *Bolbostemma paniculatum* (Maxim.) Franquet, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine known as Tu Bei Mu. It has demonstrated potent antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative activities in various preclinical models. The compound primarily induces apoptosis in cancer cells, such as the human cervical carcinoma HeLa cell line, by triggering the mitochondrial pathway. This mechanism involves the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition (PT) pore, which leads to a decrease in mitochondrial transmembrane potential and the subsequent release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. This release activates the caspase cascade, ultimately resulting in programmed cell death. Research also suggests that TBMS1 may have potential in treating other conditions due to its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.
