Overview

Tubercidin is a naturally occurring nucleoside antibiotic produced by Streptomyces tubericidus. It is an adenosine analog (purine ribonucleoside) that can substitute for adenosine in biological systems. Tubercidin is incorporated into DNA and RNA, where it inhibits nucleic acid metabolism by interfering with polymerases, thereby blocking DNA replication as well as RNA and protein synthesis. This mechanism underlies its antimetabolite, antineoplastic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic activities. Tubercidin has been studied primarily in experimental settings and has not been approved for clinical use[1][2][3][5].
