Overview

TUFF-IPC is an autologous cell therapy product composed of insulin-producing cells (IPCs) differentiated from a patient's own adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). Developed by researchers at Tokushima University with support from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), this therapy is designed to treat brittle type 1 diabetes mellitus in patients with absent endogenous insulin secretion. The therapeutic process involves extracting ADSCs from the patient's adipose tissue, differentiating them into IPCs in vitro, and then transplanting the resulting TUFF-IPC product into the patient's mesentery. The goal of the treatment is to restore physiological insulin production and improve glycemic control, potentially reducing the frequency of severe hypoglycemic episodes and the requirement for exogenous insulin injections.
