Overview

Tumescent anesthesia is a specialized local anesthetic technique characterized by the subcutaneous injection of large volumes of a highly diluted anesthetic solution, typically containing lidocaine and epinephrine. This process causes the target tissue to become swollen and firm (tumescent), providing extensive regional anesthesia and localized vasoconstriction. Poitiers University Hospital is evaluating this technique (NCT04779255) as a pain management intervention for patients undergoing photodynamic therapy (PDT) for vertex actinic keratosis. The study aims to determine if tumescent anesthesia provides superior pain relief compared to standard treatments such as paracetamol and cold water application during the PDT procedure.
