Overview

Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) is a non-invasive cancer therapy that uses low-intensity, intermediate-frequency alternating electric fields delivered through scalp-placed arrays to disrupt mitosis in rapidly dividing cancer cells. By acting on tubulin and other electrically charged components of dividing cells, TTFields interferes with the assembly of the mitotic spindle and other cellular processes critical for cell division, leading to apoptosis and inhibition of tumor growth. TTFields is primarily indicated for glioblastoma (GBM), both newly diagnosed and recurrent forms, often in combination with temozolomide or as monotherapy. It has also received approval for use in malignant pleural mesothelioma and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. The therapy tends to have fewer systemic side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy; the most common adverse events are mild-to-moderate skin reactions at the site of array placement. Developed by Novocure, TTFields has demonstrated improved progression-free survival and overall survival when combined with standard-of-care treatments in clinical trials[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
