Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tung Shueh pills (also known as Tung Shueh Wan or Tong Xue) are a proprietary traditional Chinese herbal preparation marketed primarily for musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, rheumatism, and to improve blood circulation. Historically distributed and packaged by companies such as Ta Ang Pharmaceutical, these pills have been subject to numerous regulatory recalls and warnings by the FDA and international health authorities due to contamination with heavy metals (such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium) and illegal adulteration with undeclared Western pharmaceutical agents, including diazepam, chlorzoxazone, mefenamic acid, and corticosteroids like betamethasone. Clinically, exposure to Tung Shueh pills has been associated with severe adverse events, including acute interstitial nephritis, irreversible end-stage kidney disease, and drug-induced adrenal insufficiency.
