Tungsten, likely in the form of a tungsten compound such as sodium tungstate, functions as a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor. In preclinical studies, it has been shown to prevent the development of atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in hyperlipidemic ApoE knockout mice by lowering plasma XO activity and attenuating vascular superoxide anion formation. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are implicated in the progression of atherosclerosis. By inhibiting XO, tungsten reduces oxidative stress, thereby mitigating vascular damage. [cite: PMID: 17023262]
