TURKOVAC is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine developed to provide prophylaxis against COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Developed by Erciyes University in collaboration with the Health Institutes of Turkey (TÜSEB), the vaccine utilizes a traditional platform where the SARS-CoV-2 virus (specifically the hCoV-19/Turkey/ERAGEM-001/2020 isolate) is propagated in Vero cells and subsequently inactivated using beta-propiolactone. This process renders the virus unable to replicate while maintaining the structural integrity of its antigens, including the spike and nucleocapsid proteins, to trigger an immune response. The vaccine is formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. TURKOVAC received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in Turkey in December 2021 and has been studied as both a primary two-dose vaccination series and as a heterologous booster dose following other COVID-19 vaccines.
