Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tussi-12 DS is a combination pharmaceutical product formulated as an oral suspension for the symptomatic relief of cough, nasal congestion, and allergic symptoms associated with the common cold and upper respiratory infections. It contains three active ingredients: **carbetapentane**, a non-opioid antitussive that suppresses the cough reflex; **phenylephrine**, a sympathomimetic decongestant that targets alpha-adrenergic receptors to reduce nasal vascular swelling; and **pyrilamine**, a first-generation antihistamine that antagonizes H1 receptors to alleviate sneezing and rhinorrhea. Developed by Meda AB, the formulation often utilizes tannate salts to provide a sustained-release effect, typically allowing for a 12-hour dosing interval. While widely used for respiratory symptom management, many products in this class were part of the FDA's review of unapproved marketed drugs.
