Overview

Tutin is a **toxic plant-derived sesquiterpene neurotoxin** isolated primarily from the New Zealand tutu plant (*Coriaria* spp) and occasionally found as a contaminant in honey[2][3][4]. Mechanistically, **tutin is a potent non-competitive antagonist of the GABAA receptor** and also inhibits glycine receptors, leading to loss of inhibitory neurotransmission in the CNS and resulting in powerful convulsant (seizure-inducing) effects in mammals[2][3][1]. In mice, tutin has been shown to activate calcineurin (CN), further contributing to epileptogenesis[1].
