Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Twirla (AG-200-15) is a combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) transdermal patch developed by Agile Therapeutics. It is designed to deliver a daily dose of 120 mcg of levonorgestrel (a progestin) and 30 mcg of ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) over a seven-day period. The patch utilizes the proprietary Skinfusion technology, which consists of multiple layers designed to provide effective hormone delivery while maintaining adhesion and comfort. Its primary mechanism of action is the suppression of gonadotropins, which inhibits ovulation. Additionally, it induces changes in the cervical mucus (increasing viscosity to prevent sperm penetration) and the endometrium (reducing the likelihood of implantation). It is indicated for use by women of reproductive potential with a body mass index (BMI) less than 30 kg/m², as its efficacy may be reduced in women with higher BMIs.
