TWP-0001 is an allogeneic cell therapy product consisting of a sheet of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the periodontal ligament (PDL). Developed by Tokyo Women's Medical University, it is designed for the treatment of periodontitis, specifically targeting the regeneration of periodontal tissues in patients with residual defects such as 1-wall intrabony, Class III furcation, or horizontal defects. The therapy involves the transplantation of a cell sheet, which is created using temperature-responsive culture dishes that allow the harvest of intact cell layers with their extracellular matrix. This approach aims to restore the attachment apparatus, including the cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, which are typically lost due to chronic inflammatory periodontal disease.
