Type III collagen is a fibrillar structural protein found abundantly in the extracellular matrix of connective tissues, especially in skin, lungs, intestinal walls, and blood vessels. It is initially synthesized as procollagen with three pro-alpha1(III) chains that form a triple helix structure. After post-translational modifications and enzymatic processing outside the cell, mature type III collagen assembles into stable fibrils that provide strength and elasticity to tissues. Type III collagen plays a crucial role in tissue repair and regeneration by facilitating proper fibrillogenesis of type I collagen and supporting cell proliferation and migration. Recombinant forms are produced for research or medical use via expression systems such as yeast or mammalian cells[6][7][8][9][10]. In clinical settings, it may be used as a biomaterial for wound healing or tissue engineering; commercially available products are often derived from human placenta or recombinant sources.
