Overview

This entry refers to historical combination vaccines containing killed Salmonella Typhi (typhoid) and Salmonella Paratyphi (paratyphoid A and B) antigens, often termed TAB vaccines, which were used to prevent enteric fever before being largely replaced by modern monovalent typhoid vaccines and investigational bivalent typhoid–paratyphoid conjugate vaccines. These products typically used inactivated whole-cell organisms or polysaccharide antigens from S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi formulated in a single injectable vaccine to induce serotype-specific antibodies and reduce the risk of typhoid and paratyphoid fever. Their use has declined because of limited and inconsistent efficacy data for paratyphoid components, local and systemic reactogenicity, and the availability of better-tolerated typhoid-only vaccines; contemporary typhoid–paratyphoid vaccine development instead focuses on conjugate or novel platforms targeting Vi capsular polysaccharide of S. Typhi and O-specific polysaccharide antigens of S. Paratyphi A.
