Overview

*Typhonium giganteum* whole is a botanical extract derived from the plant *Typhonium giganteum Engl.*, which is recognized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as BaiFuzi. It is primarily utilized as an active ingredient in topical over-the-counter (OTC) herbal products, such as Yiganerjing Herbal cream, where it is typically formulated at a 3% concentration. The extract is intended for external application to inhibit the growth of bacteria, specifically *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Escherichia coli* (Colibacillus). While laboratory research has identified bioactive compounds within the plant—including cerebrosides, fatty acids, and other phytochemicals—that may possess anticancer or neuroprotective properties, these effects have not been clinically validated for therapeutic use. The FDA has not found products containing this extract to be safe or effective, and they are not approved for medical treatment in the United States.
