Tyropanoic acid is an iodinated radiocontrast agent formerly used in diagnostic imaging of the gallbladder and biliary tract. It is a derivative of propanoic acid with four iodine atoms incorporated into its aromatic rings to enhance X-ray absorption. Tyropanoic acid acts by increasing the radiopacity of bile after intravenous administration, allowing visualization of the biliary system during cholecystography and cholangiography. Its mechanism involves passive excretion into bile following hepatic uptake; it does not have pharmacological activity beyond its use as a contrast medium. The drug was developed by Winthrop (now part of Sanofi) for medical imaging but has largely been replaced by newer agents with improved safety profiles.
