Tyrosine is a non-essential aromatic amino acid with the chemical formula C9H11NO3. It is synthesized in animals from phenylalanine and serves as a precursor for several important biomolecules including catecholamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine; thyroid hormones; and melanin pigment[1][8]. Tyrosine plays a critical role in protein synthesis and cellular signaling due to its phenolic side chain, which can be phosphorylated by protein kinases—a key step in many signal transduction pathways[2][5]. In clinical settings, tyrosine is used as a component of parenteral nutrition solutions to support protein synthesis in patients unable to eat normally[8]. It also has roles in photosynthesis and other metabolic processes.
