Overview

Tyrosine-naphthoquinone is a synthetic amino acid-naphthoquinone derivative investigated for its potential as an anticancer agent, particularly for the treatment of cervical cancer. Developed by researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and CINVESTAV-IPN, the compound is synthesized using microwave-assisted synthesis (MAS) to improve yields and reduce reaction times. Its mechanism of action is primarily attributed to its oxidant-reductive properties, which facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to cytotoxicity and the inhibition of cell proliferation. In preclinical in vitro studies, tyrosine-naphthoquinone has demonstrated dose-dependent growth inhibition across various cervical cancer cell lines, including HPV-16 positive (SiHa), HPV-18 positive (CaLo), and HPV-negative (C33-A) lines, showing a differential effect between tumorigenic and non-tumorigenic cells.
