Overview

**Tyrothricin** is a naturally derived topical polypeptide antibiotic complex produced by *Brevibacillus brevis*. It comprises gramicidin peptides and tyrocidine cyclic peptides. Its antimicrobial activity is principally mediated by direct interaction with microbial cytoplasmic membranes, causing pore formation, disturbed membrane organization and permeability, ion leakage, and loss of essential cellular functions. Because of local and systemic toxicity risk, tyrothricin is used as a local anti-infective rather than a systemic antibiotic, including in products for superficial bacterial wound infections and local oropharyngeal infections. A Phase IIa study has evaluated tyrothricin-containing Tyrosur gel in an experimental wound-healing model.
