UA002 is a small molecule inhibitor of Galectin-3 (Gal-3) being developed by U-Neuron Biomedical for the treatment of functional impairments resulting from neural injuries, such as spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Galectin-3 is a carbohydrate-binding protein that is significantly upregulated in the central nervous system following injury, where it promotes neuroinflammation and the formation of a dense glial scar that physically and chemically inhibits axonal regrowth. By targeting and inhibiting Galectin-3, UA002 aims to modulate the post-injury microenvironment to favor neural regeneration and the restoration of motor and sensory functions. The candidate is currently in the early stages of development, progressing through IND-enabling studies.
