Overview

UAS Immunotherapy refers to a specific subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT) protocol developed and managed by United Allergy Services (UAS). This protocol is designed for implementation within primary care settings, allowing non-allergists to provide customized allergy treatment. The process involves identifying a patient's specific environmental sensitivities through skin prick testing, followed by the administration of a customized mixture of FDA-approved allergen extracts. The treatment consists of a build-up phase and a maintenance phase of subcutaneous injections. The mechanism of action involves the induction of peripheral T-cell tolerance, the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and a shift in the immune response from a Th2-dominated (allergic) profile to a Th1-dominated profile. This leads to increased production of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and TGF-beta, an increase in allergen-specific IgG4 'blocking' antibodies, and a long-term reduction in allergen-specific IgE-mediated mast cell and basophil activation.
