Overview

UBX0601 is a **small molecule Bcl-xL inhibitor** and the active parent compound released from the prodrug UBX1325 (foselutoclax). UBX0601 targets senescent cells by selectively inhibiting the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-xL (BCL2L1), a key member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis-regulating proteins. This inhibition induces apoptosis specifically in senescent cells within ocular tissues, promoting their clearance while sparing non-senescent cells[1][3][5]. The main therapeutic rationale is to reduce pathogenic senescent cell burden in retinal diseases to preserve or restore visual function. UBX0601 has been evaluated in preclinical and clinical studies, notably for its potential in treating diabetic macular edema and other retinal vascular diseases[1][2][3][5]. The molecule was developed by UNITY Biotechnology.
