Overview

UC1MT is a mouse monoclonal antibody that targets extracellular metallothionein (MT), a family of low molecular weight, cysteine-rich, metal-binding proteins involved in cellular homeostasis and immunity. Metallothioneins are upregulated in response to heavy metals, oxidative stress, and inflammatory cytokines. While traditionally considered intracellular proteins, MTs can also be found extracellularly during chronic cellular stress or inflammation. Extracellular MT acts as a danger signal that attracts leukocytes and modulates immune responses. By binding to and blocking extracellular MT, UC1MT has been shown in preclinical studies to enhance T-dependent humoral immune responses by increasing antigen-specific plasma cell differentiation without affecting overall hematopoiesis. This mechanism suggests potential for treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases where aberrant MT signaling contributes to pathology[2][5]. The antibody was originally developed at the University of Connecticut and licensed for development by Biohaven Pharmaceutical Holding Company Ltd[5].
