UCB-554 is a small molecule positive allosteric modulator (PAM) of the M1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (CHRM1). Developed by UCB, it was primarily investigated for the treatment of cognitive impairment associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. By selectively modulating the M1 receptor, UCB-554 aims to enhance cholinergic neurotransmission, which is critical for memory and learning, while potentially avoiding the side effects associated with non-selective muscarinic agonists. Clinical development reached Phase 1, where its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics were evaluated in healthy volunteers.
