UCB mononuclear cells + UC-MSC exosomes is a combination biologic therapy being investigated for the treatment of radiation pneumonitis. The therapy consists of mononuclear cells derived from umbilical cord blood (UCB-MNCs) and exosomes harvested from umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC-Exos). UCB-MNCs provide a diverse population of progenitor and immune cells that may contribute to tissue repair, while UC-MSC exosomes act as paracrine mediators, delivering a cargo of anti-inflammatory proteins and microRNAs to the site of injury. This dual approach aims to mitigate the inflammatory cascade and fibrotic changes associated with radiation-induced lung damage, potentially improving clinical outcomes for cancer patients undergoing thoracic radiotherapy.
