UCF699 is a small molecule inhibitor of Far upstream binding protein 1 (FUBP1), an anthranilic acid derivative developed by researchers at the University of Central Florida. FUBP1 is a master regulator that binds to far upstream element (FUSE) DNA sequences in the promoters of key tumor survival genes, such as c-Myc and p21, to regulate their transcription. In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells, UCF699 binds to FUBP1 and modulates the expression of these FUSE-controlled genes, effectively reprogramming the tumor cells from a pro-tumor phenotype (high c-Myc, low p21) into an anti-cancer phenotype (low c-Myc, high p21). This reprogramming leads to the inhibition of pancreatic cancer cell growth, positioning UCF699 as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of pancreatic tumors.
