Overview

Ucp2 siRNA is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of the uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) gene. UCP2 is an anion carrier protein located in the mitochondrial inner membrane that plays a critical role in energy metabolism and the regulation of immune cell fate. In research settings, Ucp2 siRNA is utilized to investigate the functional consequences of UCP2 deficiency, particularly in T cells. Studies have demonstrated that silencing UCP2 in CD4+ T cells leads to a significant shift in the Th2/Th1 ratio, promoting a pathogenic phenotype characterized by increased production of nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). This tool is primarily used in preclinical research models, such as murine melanoma and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), to elucidate the metabolic pathways governing immune responses and potential therapeutic targets for inflammatory and neoplastic diseases.
