Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Udex is a fixed-dose combination therapy containing biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (BDD) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). BDD is a synthetic derivative of schisandrin C that exhibits hepatoprotective properties by stabilizing hepatocyte membranes and reducing serum transaminase levels, such as alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST). UDCA is a hydrophilic, naturally occurring bile acid that acts as a choleretic agent, promoting bile flow and protecting liver cells and bile duct epithelial cells from the cytotoxic effects of hydrophobic bile acids. This combination is primarily used to preserve liver function in various hepatic conditions. In a specific clinical context, it is being evaluated in a Phase 3 trial by Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital to manage postoperative liver enzyme elevation and improve quality of life in patients with cholecystitis undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
