Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ugonin J is a bioactive prenylated flavonoid (specifically a cyclohexylmethyl flavonoid) isolated from the roots of the medicinal fern *Helminthostachys zeylanica*. It exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, and antiviral properties. In preclinical studies, Ugonin J has been shown to suppress hepatocyte inflammation by enhancing glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPX2)-mediated redox regulation and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. It also acts as an inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 3C-like protease (3CLpro), downregulates NANOG to suppress breast cancer stem cells, and inhibits prostate cancer progression by targeting the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB pathway and reducing ADAM9 expression. Additionally, it has demonstrated potential in ameliorating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic disorders via AMPK/Akt pathway regulation.
