Ulinastatin is a glycoprotein derived from human urine that inhibits various inflammatory proteases, such as trypsin, neutrophil elastase, and plasmin, thereby suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mitigating systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and acute lung injury. QFPD is a complex herbal decoction consisting of 21 ingredients, including Ephedrae Herba and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, which has been used to treat COVID-19 by regulating immune responses and potentially reducing viral load through multi-target interactions. The combination was specifically explored by the Wuhan Third Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic to treat severe cases by simultaneously targeting viral infection and the subsequent cytokine storm.
